Of
her work, Held has expressed:
My pieces are mysterious: almost real, but actually without
any corollary in the material world. They have the intensity
of old bones and are evocative of the body and the body's
presence. I am drawn to experimentation with disparate
materials including translucent cast rubber, clay, wood,
metal, found objects, insect nests, thread and permeating
light. By exploiting the seductive qualities of these
materials, I juxtapose their beauty with the elemental
power of the work.
The
sculpture shown in this exhibition, THE PLACE WHERE SHE
IS, is part of a group of work begun after the death of
Marion Held's mother in 2005.
